How Love & Romance Can Have A Positive Effect On The Brain
Most people today would certainly be aware of the phrase which says “love makes the world go round”. If you look at people who feel so happy, contented or just in love often exhibit a happy and cheerful mood or disposition, and area more healthy than others who feel sad or miserable. Often times, people feel a euphoric high, especially during the early days of a romantic relationship or marriage. This is because the intense feelings of love and affection often affect the body, as well as the brain. According to health researchers, the intense feelings of love or romance can often affect the brain in the same way as illegal drugs like cocaine, or a strong pain reliever does. Here's how love and romance can have a positive and soothing effect on the human brain.
Intense Love Equals Less Pain
Researchers from the State University of New York Department of Psychology have for years been conducting studies on the positive effect of love on the human brain. Researchers recruited a number of couples, who had their brain waves analyzed. The SUNY study team focused on the obsessive or “euphoric' stage or phase of the romantic relationship, instead of the type of love experienced with mature relationships. The study team noted that love ad romance affected the human brain in the same way as illegal and addictive drugs do, because it targets the brain’s feel good chemical, which is called dopamine. Couples who felt intense love were often noted to have felt lesser pain with minor sprains, wounds or bruises. Thus, the study team noted that high levels of dopamine were keys towards effective pain management.
What Chemicals Are Released When We Fall In Love?
When a person feels intense love, scientists think that three major chemicals or neurotransmitters are released, and hold sway during this period. These chemicals include adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin. Scientists note that during the initial stages of falling in love, adrenaline starts to pump in. This chemical makes you sweat, makes your heart race and dries your mouth. Surging dopamine levels are characterized by increased energy, less need for sleep or food, focused attention, and a sheer delight for even the smallest details in the relationship. The increase in serotonin is highlighted in almost the same manner as the chemicals earlier described.
Scientists and health researchers also agree that if the couple feels more intense feelings of love, then they are certain to engage in sex more often. And the more sex a couple has, the deeper their bonds become, and more feel-good and healthy chemicals are released not just in the brain, but in the whole body too.
So, if you want to fall in love (but you don't know whom to fall for) find a complete stranger that you're attracted to, reveal to each other the intimate aspects or details of your lives for half an hour, and stare deeply into each other's eyes for a few minutes, before talking.
