The Gift

The Gift is an American thriller film, also considered as supernatural because the protagonist has supernatural abilities. The movie was directed by Sam Raimi, produced by Grant Curtis and written by both Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson. It was released on the 22nd of December in the year 2000. The budget for the film is ten million dollars and the estimated profit from the movie is forty four million and six hundred  thousand dollars. Billy Bob Thornton is one of the writers and he incorporated the supposed and professed psychic abilities and experiences of his mother.

The story of the film revolves around the disappearance of a woman named Jessica King (played by Katie Holmes), who is the wife of Wayne Collins (played by Greg Kinnear), a community school teacher in the town of Brixton in Georgia. Annie Wilson (played by Cate Blanchett) is a widowed psychic, clairvoyant and fortune teller. She is the go-to psychic in their town.

Annie perceived a vision where she sees Jessica being murdered and her body was dumped in a nearby pond. After she got the vision, she went to the police station and told the local sheriff, Pearl Johnson (played by J.K. Simmons), about. Sheriff Johnson is a bit skeptical and doubtful at first if he will believe what Annie is telling him but he still went on the case and searched the pond at Donnie Barksdale’s (played by Keanu Reeves) home. Donnie Barksdale is a violent man and he has a wife named Valerie Barksdale (played by Hilary Swank). Valerie is one of Annie’s regular clients, she goes to her for psychic readings every now and then. Donnie had formerly intimidated and threatened Annie, and also her children, because she had seen their situation and had told Valerie to leave him. When the police arrived at the Barksdale residences, Valerie allowed them to search the premises while Donnie is away. He came back while the police are still searching. Donnie was arrested when they have found Jessica’s body in his pond. There was a trial for the murder and then it was revealed that Donnie had affair with Jessica. He was then sentenced guilty and was sent behind bars.

Meanwhile, a friend of Annie named Buddy Cole, secretly feels hatred and anger towards his own father. He wanted to tell Annie why he feels that way and why he hates his father but Annie was too distracted and engrossed in thought to listen to her friend. The same evening, the mother of Buddy called Annie and told her that Buddy had lost it and tied his father on a chair and sets him on fire. Buddy has been taken to a mental hospital, and it has been revealed that he was abused by his father, sexually, when he was still a child. It affected his thinking and his mind and got emotionally unstable while growing up.

Annie perceives another message, another vision, saying that Donnie had nothing to do with Jessica’s death and that he is innocent. She went to the police station again and asked the local prosecutor, David Duncan (played by Gary Cole), to open the case again and investigate deeper. David refuses to do so which resulted to Annie blackmailing him that she will reveal that she witnessed firsthand that he and Jessica had sexual activities before. David tried to bribe and pay her off but she refuses to accept as she only wants to reopen the case and provide justice for Donnie Barksdale.

So after being rejected, Annie went to Wayne, Jessica’s husband, telling him that Donnie is not the one who killed Jessica and that she already told the police department but they won’t her her out and won’t reopen the case. Wayne asked Annie to come with him at the pond where they found Jessica’s body and she obliged. On the way to the pond, Annie had a vision that it was actually Wayne who killed Jessica and threw her on the pond that they are headed to. She asked him and he confessed to killing his wife because he got mad and jealous after learning that she was having an affair with Donnie. After confessing, he went on to kill Annie and smacked her head with the back of a flashlight. He wasn’t able to kill Annie with it then Buddy appeared out of nowhere and knocked Wayne unconscious. They both locked him in the car’s compartment and drove to the police station.

Annie told Buddy that he needs to go back to the mental hospital as it would help him heal and be better. She went inside the police station and asked Buddy to stay in the car. When she got back to the car after reporting to the police, Buddy was gone. She told Sheriff Johnson about what happened at the lake and that Buddy helped her escape death. He told her that that would not be possible because Buddy had committed suicide earlier in the morning when the incident at the lake happened.

You might ask why Annie didn’t see the real killer in the beginning of the story and had to put Donnie Barksdale in a prison cell before seeing that it was somebody else who killed Jessica, yes? Well, for your information, psychic readings aren’t always accurate because it depends on the psychic’s ability to interpret what he or she sees in his or her visions. Also, they only see symbols and signs with their minds, not precise and exact things.

Psychic readings are great for advices and guidance towards a better life. It can help you make better decisions for you and your loved ones. Although, you should never base everything on a reading. Just consider what a psychic sees in you but remember that your own decisions and ideas should still be the one you choose. Don’t just depend on the readings because they are not one hundred percent accurate. Use it as mere guides and inspiration to a better life.
