What is the meaning of supernatural?

 

Here is the dictionary definition of supernatural:

a. a disposition of existence or being beyond the perceptible and discernible universe

b. relating or associating with God, spirits, evil, etc.

c. out of the norm activities, events or happenings that defies the laws of nature

d. entities that could not be seen by the naked eye such as ghosts, spirits, etc.

 

Basically, the idea of supernatural incorporates and contains everything that could not be explained, described and clarified by any scientific understandings and research-based theories, hypothesis and propositions. It defies the laws of nature that exists here in our physical world. The word supernatural was derived from the French term: supernaturel and the Latin term: supernaturalis, which means beyond nature.

 

Good examples would be the entities that are not visible to the naked eye such as angels, gods, demons, ghosts, spirits, and many more. There are also extraordinary abilities that exists such as extrasensory perception, telekinesis, telepathy, magic, fortune telling and a lot more of psychic powers are considered supernatural.

In the old times, the people believed that supernatural entities are behind the inexplicable phenomenons that naturally happen like lightnings in the sky when it rains, the changing of the four seasons and even the five basic senses of the humans. Although today, the naturalists believe and has a conviction that nothing else exists beyond our physical world and they keep a skeptical and cynical attitude towards supernatural beings, entities and phenomenons.

Supernatural in Religion

Deity

 

Deities are supernatural beings that are known to be holy and consecrated. Basically, these being are believed to be gods and goddesses in a belief with more than one god or anyone that is respected and valued as divine.

According to C. Scott Littleton, deities are entities with supernatural powers that ordinary human beings do not possess. These entities interact and associates themselves with humans, either in a good way or a bad way, and these interactions allow the ordinary human beings to a whole new level of consciousness that permits and grants them a better feeling or knowledge of themselves aside from the engrossment and concentration in their normal lives.

Angels

 

Angels are basically one of the most popular supernatural beings that could exist. In fact, you could read and find angels in a lot of different religions. Angels are believed to be holy and divine beings who act as mediators or intercessors between the Heaven or God himself and Earth. It is also believed that angels are responsible for shepherding and securing the safety of the human beings.

Prophecy

 

This supernatural event happens when a god communicates and reaches out to a prophet or a seer to relay and transmit messages, knowledge and information. The knowledge being passed could mean some inspiration, enlightenment and revelation of what’s in store in a certain person’s future.

Revelation

Revelation is the disclosing and unveiling of the truth, understanding and consciousness about a certain thing, person, event or place, through communication and transmission with a god or other supernatural beings.

Reincarnation

 

The idea of reincarnation is when a person, animal or any living creature in this physical world begins a new life in another physical form, shape or appearance after its death. Another term for this is rebirth, resurrection or transmigration. Reincarnation was established and began in various ancient cultures and religious beliefs such as Spiritism, Theosophy and Orthodox Judaism and the idea regarding rebirth came from famous Greek people such as Socrates, Plato and Pythagoras. Tribes in East Asia, Australia and South America also believed in reincarnation.

Karma

 

Karma is basically the belief that everything we do, we will get something to back in return. It is like a cause and effect pattern where the purpose, intentions, deeds and actions of one person influences and affects the future of that certain person. Fundamentally, good actions and intentions would lead to good karma and a merry future, while bad acts and desires would be conducive to having a painful or distressing future and bad karma.

Spirits

 

It has long been known that spirits such as ghosts, angels and fairies, exist and these beings are considered as supernatural or paranormal beings. Spirits are theoretically referred to as the consciousness or the awareness of the earthly body.

Demon

 

Demons are known to be supernatural beings as well and they are often mentioned as malicious, spiteful and evil creatures, this is according to religious beliefs, cults and folklore. They are cited as detrimental and dangerous otherworldly spirits who are lower than the heavenly planes and are also related to demonic activities and influences. Theory is that, demons are believed to be summoned, suppressed and controlled.

Magic

 

Another term for magic is sorcery and this is an execution, belief or faith about something that uses supernatural forces that make use of certain symbols, rites, ceremonies, motions and languages in order to accomplish and master magic. Up until today, a lot of people are still practicing the use of magic or believes in it and are fascinated by the thought of it.

 

The term magic came from the Persian word magu, which is a name for a divine and spiritual administrators and officials but little is known about it. In the early days, there is a negative implication and suggestion with regards to religious ceremonies and rituals where the people call it dishonest, deceitful, idiosyncratic, threatening and perilous. Ever since magic was formed or created, a lot of individuals have practiced it and called themselves as magicians.

Divination

 

Divination is the effort or act to obtain and acquire insights and understanding regarding a question, uncertainties, conditions and circumstances by supernatural and magical gathering or ceremony. Diviners use this method to get signs and understanding regarding current events and they will base their advises and interpretation from what they get in the divination.

 

Supernatural is not something that you see everyday nor something that happens out of the ordinary but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is not real. Most of the ordinary people wouldn’t experience it on a daily basis, thus the negative connotation alongside the term supernatural. Usually people with high level of intuition and perception such as psychics, clairvoyants, seers, prophets, etc.,are the ones who understand it the most.
