Chinese Calendar Astrology
According to the Christian method of dating the years of the calendar, the first year starts with the birth year of Jesus Christ. The year 2008 denotes that two thousand and eight years have passed since the birth of Christ. This is linear calculation. We start calculating the years or time in a straight line starting from the year Christ was born and come to the present year and will continue in the future.
The time, date and year are the basic determinants in making astrological calculations in Western astrology.
The Chinese Calendar
The method of calculating the years in Chinese calendar astrology is different. It is cyclical rather than linear. Cyclical means that the time keeps moving round like the wheel of a cycle.
It is a repetitive process that continues endlessly. It moves in the same pattern. Each cycle year is named after an animal. There are twelve animals. The twelve animal names or signs are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. Each animal sign rules for one year. So after twelve years the same animal sign comes up again. Rat year, for example, comes up after twelve years.
Chinese horoscope, accordingly, has evolved around these twelve animal signs as against the Western astrology that is based upon months of the year and different zodiac signs like Aries, Pisces and so on associated with them.
There is, however, one common factor between the Western and the Chinese astrological signs. This is that the personality traits of every human being are determined by his/her astrological sign whether it is a sun or an animal sign.
Western Astrology
While in Western astrology, the personality traits of each individual are related to his zodiac sign which is governed by a planet such as Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and so on, in Chinese astrology, the personality and traits of each human being are governed by the animal sign.
To explain it further, according to Western astrology the day and the month you are born will fall within one of the twelve zodiac signs such as Aries, Pisces and so on. Your birth sign is governed by a planet, which is in ascendance at the precise moment of your birth.
In Chinese astrology, if you are born in the year of a certain animal sign, say Rat, your personality traits would be affected by the characteristics of the Rat.
Another common factor between the two astrological systems is the number 12. While in Western astrology there are twelve zodiac signs, there are twelve animal signs in Chinese astrology.
Each animal in Chinese astrology takes twelve years to appear and is followed by the next animal in the same order. This can be explained by the following chart. Let us assume the base year is 1900.

As said earlier, if you are born under the Rat sign, you will imbibe the qualities of rat. The concept and qualities of a Chinese Rat are quite different from those in West or the rest of the world. While a rat is despised in rest of the world, it is considered an active and a nimble creature that exudes charm and an element of pro-activity. It is a very smart creature that can manipulate others to achieve its ends.
